Coffee with Chris … The Standard You Live By

Nov 29, 2025

There’s a moment from my past that has shaped how I lead…how I sell…and how I carry myself as a man.

I had a customer I respected...good man...good family...we built trust over time and he became more than a customer…he became a friend.

We were in the middle of a project when my boss pulled me aside...he told me there was an issue with the job…and he essentially said wanted me to hide it...

Just don’t mention it...downplay it...hope it never becomes a problem.

But the issue had the potential to become a safety risk...not cosmetic or minor...something real...

I looked at him and said the words he probably never expected...

I won't do that.

And if he chose to lie to the customer, I'd tell them.

He didn’t like it...he pushed back...he wanted the easy path...

But I refused to lie...I refused to deceive someone who trusted me...I refused to compromise my name to protect someone else’s bottom line

So, when he chose to lie and hide the truth, I told the customer...fully...directly...respectfully...

And that decision earned me a customer for life...not because I was perfect, but because I was honest...

And that moment certainly taught me something...

A man’s values are not what he says...a man’s values are how he behaves when pressure shows up...

Leadership isn’t a title...leadership is courage under pressure...and courage is a choice.

If you want to lead…in business, in family, in life…you have to live by a standard...

Not sometimes...not when it’s convenient...always.

You protect your name...you protect your integrity...you protect your people...you protect the truth.

Leadership is not loud...leadership is consistent.

Be the kind of leader who is worth following.

What’s Filling My Cup

🎧 Song: Better Together … Luke Combs
📖 Reading: still reading "MainStreet Millionaire" ... Codie Sanchez (I really need to spend more time readin)
💪 Training: Mon (lower), Wed (upper), Fri & Sat (full body)...these are my strength training days.
🌲 Pond Moment: Still warm enough that I have the bog filter turned on (extra filtration)...won't be long until it's just the main waterfall running for the rest of the winter.

Truth … Question … Action

Truth: Leadership is revealed under pressure
Question: Where are you tempted to take the easy path?
Action: Choose the harder right over the easier wrong

Your Superpower might be simpler than you think...
There’s a pattern I’ve started to notice in my career… Superpowers are a thing. I’m usually not the smartest person in the room...like ever. I’m not the technical expert (those who know me can stop laughing any time now)... And I’m rarely the one building the product... But I do seem to have one consistent advantage. I build like and trust with people quickly. Some people call it networking… I ...
Why Trust Matters More Than Titles
One quiet goal I have these days. I want to be someone people trust without hesitation. Not because of a title...not because of a position... Just because of who I am. That might sound simple, but the older I get the more I realize how rare that kind of trust actually is. Most of the world is built around titles. Vice President...founder...CEO...Executive... Those things can create authority......
Maybe We've Been Asking the Wrong Question?
How on earth is that possible? And it’s not like I’ve never been asked. That question has been coming at me for decades now…usually from people who had their lives figured out far earlier than I did. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” When I was a kid, I had the same big dreams most kids have. Mine just happened to involve becoming a professional basketball player. Never mind the fact t...
